The Crying Clown - 3

  1. THE CRYING CLOWN 3 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It was originally scheduled to appear in a book titled, "The Crying Clown Celebration," by John F. Carr, but it was published in 2013 as, "A Certain Flair For Death".

    - continued from No. 313 -
    I'm "crying" because in my opinion the politically correct editors at Doubleday Books have censored their latest editions of Ray Bradbury's famous book, "The Martian Chronicles". They deleted the story, "Way in the Middle of the Air," and this is why I believe they did it; The story takes place in the future when spaceships are available to all black people. They are no longer willing to suffer the indignity of racism on Earth and have decided to leave the planet to find a world where they can live with dignity.
    This is how Bradbury begins his story;
    "Did you hear about it?"
    "About what?"
    "The niggers, the niggers!"
    "What about 'em?"
    "Them leaving, pulling out, going away; did you hear?"

    I can think of no other word that is so truly representative of the hateful language used by bigots and racists against black people. Bradbury uses that ugly word in this story to expose them, to shame them , it is what makes the story so powerful. No one should be offended, or object to the use of "that" word as used in this story. You cannot be afraid of "words," you have to expose them for what they are.

    Beware of those who would "cleanse" our society, those who profess to know what is best for us . After they rid us of "bad words," what next, Bad Books? - Will they become the book burners in Bradbury's classic novel, "Fahrenheit 451"? Doubleday, Doubleday, What are you doing?
